PURE FOOD ESSENTIALS Organic Besan Flour is also known as chickpea or garbanzo or gram flour. It’s made from dried, ground chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans.

So many names are used for this deliciously rich gluten-free flour! Protein-rich, and a low Glycemic Index (GI) food.

This flour is great for making batters, for thickening foods and as an egg-free binding ingredient for fritters and flat breads. As a dense, flavour-packed flour it’s generally used for baking in combination with lighter flours. However, the distinctive flavours of Indian pakoras and fritters, Italian panelle or farinata, and French socca all rely on the rich, nutty besan flour flavour.

Health Benefits and Therapeutic Uses of Besan Flour

  • Besan flour is high in protein
  • Rich in total and soluble fiber as well as in resistant starch, contributing to the low glycemic index of chickpea flour.
  • Eating more low-glycemic foods is a way to naturally reverse diabetes, have more energy and prevent sugar cravings.
  • Chickpeas may be beneficial in balancing cholesterol, reducing hypertension, maintaining a healthy weight and protecting from heart disease and some cancers.
  • Chickpeas are slowly digested by the body providing a valuable energy source that may assist in balancing blood sugars.
  • Beans can help keep arteries clear from dangerous plaque build-up, maintain healthy blood pressure levels, and decrease the chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
  • Helps make you feel full and curb food cravings, helping to lose weight fast.

  • Well known uses come from Italy and France where it's fried and roasted into a variety of snacks and breads.
  • In Southern France it’s cooked like polenta, cooled, sliced into logs, then fried for the addictive snack known as panisse.

  • Used to make a big (traditionally wood-oven-roasted) unleavened pancake known as farinata in Italy and socca in France.
